Service Description

French-speaking West Africa is a group of fast-growing markets that many exporters overlook. Most of these countries share a common currency, the West African CFA franc, and belong to the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), which makes it possible to plan a regional approach instead of one country at a time. WHICH COUNTRIES Benin, Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are the French-speaking members of UEMOA (Guinea-Bissau is also a member). Guinea is French-speaking but uses its own currency. Benin and Togo have busy ports at Cotonou and Lome that also serve landlocked neighbours such as Niger and Burkina Faso. WHAT SELLS Pharmaceuticals and medical consumables, food and FMCG, building materials, electrical products, solar equipment, vehicles and spare parts, machinery, and textiles. Demand is price-sensitive, but quality and reliable supply matter a great deal for public and institutional buyers. THE MAIN CHALLENGES - Language: labels, contracts and documents often need to be in French. - Regulation: regulated products such as medicines need registration with the national authority before they can be sold. - Distribution: networks are built on relationships; choosing the wrong distributor can block a market for years. - Payment: advance payment, letters of credit and trade credit insurance each have their place; payment risk must be planned. - Logistics: port procedures, pre-shipment inspection requirements and transit to inland countries. A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH 1. Choose one or two entry countries based on demand, competition and ease of registration. 2. Check product registration and labelling requirements. 3. Set export prices that work after freight, duties and distributor margins. 4. Identify and vet two or three potential distributors or importers. 5. Visit the market, meet partners and agree terms. 6. Launch with a clear plan for promotion, stock and payments. 7. Review results after six months and expand to neighbouring markets. HOW AUM VITALIS HELPS With long experience in Benin and Togo, we support market research, registration guidance, distributor search and vetting, tender support, pricing, and launch planning. We also help West African buyers source products from India. Start with our free 30-minute Africa market-entry consultation, or email support@aumconsultancybj.com. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is one registration valid for all UEMOA countries? Not usually. Many regulated products, including medicines, still need registration in each country, although regional harmonisation is progressing. We check the current rules for your product. Do I need a local company? Not always. Many exporters start with an importer or distributor who holds the necessary licences. A local company becomes useful when volumes grow or for some public tenders. Which country should I start with? It depends on your product. Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal are the largest economies in the group; Benin and Togo are efficient entry points with ports serving inland markets. We help you choose based on data, not guesswork. How long does it take to start selling? Unregulated products can often be shipped within weeks once a distributor is found. Regulated products depend on registration timelines, which can take many months. Planning early saves time.
